Carlisle United's under-18s face a trip to Wrexham in the last 16 of the EFL Youth Alliance Cup.

An away tie against the Welsh club is the young Blues' reward for progressing to the knockout stages.

Mark Birch's side impressively topped northern Group A with four wins and a defeat from their five matches.

The draw has now given them a clash with a Wrexham side who set a similar record in topping Group B.

Carlisle, in the group stage, claimed 4-1 home win over Accrington Stanley, following that with a 3-2 home win over Preston North End and a 3-2 win at Morecambe.

They went down 4-0 at home to Bolton Wanderers but bounced back with a 5-3 win at Blackpool as they finished ahead of Bolton at the top of the group.

League One club Wrexham are owner by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Their youth boss is the former Everton and Barrow striker Nick Chadwick.

The Wrexham tie is set to be played next month, and gives the United under-18s the opportunity of further cup progress in a season which also saw Birch's side reach the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

The young Blues defeated Altrincham and Barnsley before going down to Plymouth Argyle after extra-time at Brunton Park.
