Wrexham have been linked with a £2m move for Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie following the opening of the January transfer window.

The Red Dragons are reportedly preparing to do battle with League One rivals Huddersfield Town to acquire the 27-year-old's services.

The Scottish forward signed for the Pilgrims in 2020 and has scored 64 goals across 230 appearances during a period in which the club has risen from League Two to the Championship.

Hardie's tally includes 12 goals in the second tier during Plymouth's first campaign back in the division last season.

However, Plymouth are currently rock bottom of the Championship and without a manager after recently sacking Wayne Rooney.

While Hardie has only found the net once this season, Football League World reports that Wrexham are keen to sign him to boost their promotion push.

Phil Parkinson's side sit third in League One after losing 2-1 away at Barnsley on New Year's Day.

Sanctioning a move for Hardie would not come cheap for Wrexham's Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

His £2m valuation is more than triple that of the club's current record signing Mo Faal, who joined from West Brom for a reported fee of £590,000 during the summer.

However, Wrexham director Shaun Harvey previously confirmed funds will be made available to Parkinson this month as his team chases a third successive promotion.

It comes as the club's forwards have been struggling to find the net on a regular basis this season.

Jack Marriott is Wrexham's current highest-scoring striker with five goals, but has been sidelined since October with a broken leg.

Talisman Paul Mullin has only notched twice in the league after undergoing back surgery during the summer, while strike partner Ollie Palmer has three goals to his name.

Veteran striker Steven Fletcher has spared Wrexham's blushes on a couple of occasions in recent weeks after coming off the bench to score later winners against Blackpool and Wigan.

Despite the former Sunderland man's four goals, Parkinson has been forced to manage his game time carefully because of a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Faal has found minutes hard to come by and missed yesterday's defeat at Barnsley with a virus.

Wrexham have already been linked with a number of strikers ahead of the transfer window, including Leeds United star Patrick Bamford.

Bristol City forward Harry Cornick is also said to be on their target list after receiving permission to explore his options in January.
