Wrexham have scrapped a controversial surcharge for supporters to use a fan zone at the Racecourse Ground following a backlash.

The club, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, opened the fan zone behind the temporary Kop stand at the start of this season.

Tickets providing exclusive access to an area offering live music, player meet and greets and food and drink stalls were made available for £32 - £10 more than the normal £22 entry fee for match days.

However, the move sparked anger from some supporters when those sat in the middle section of the stand were forced to shell out for premium tickets, regardless of whether they wanted to use the fan zone.

Attendances in the temporary stand have gradually dwindled in the last few months, despite incentives being offered to encourage more people to use it.

There were large gaps in the area behind the goal during Wrexham's 2-2 draw with Cambridge United on Saturday, when Deadpool star Reynolds was present alongside actor friend Channing Tatum.

The crowd of 11,698 was the club's lowest home attendance in League One so far this season.

Four days later, it has been announced that the fan zone charge will be removed for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign with sponsors, including McElhenney's Four Walls Whiskey brand, covering the cost instead.

In a statement, Wrexham officials said: “Having listened to supporter feedback and thanks to the support of some of our partners, Wrexham AFC are pleased to announce changes to our Kop fan zone for the remainder of the season.

“The fan zone area has been reconfigured to allow access to all supporters, ensuring every supporter with a ticket in the Fourth Wall Temporary Kop Stand can access the amenities. This means all Kop tickets include access to the fan zone as standard.

“Furthermore we are pleased to announce that, thanks to the generosity of Four Walls Whiskey and other club partners, all fan zone passes for the remainder of the season have been funded – meaning no additional charge for our supporters.”

The change means all Kop tickets will cost £22 moving forward, with pre-match access to the fan zone included as standard.

The club said supporters who have already paid extra for the upcoming matches against Blackpool and Wigan Athletic will be able to claim a free scarf.

Meanwhile, the money already received for the passes will be donated to the Wrexham Foodbank
