Doubts have been raised over reports linking Hollywood-owned Wrexham with a big money move for Patrick Bamford.

Co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney spent heavily in the January transfer window to boost the League One outfit's promotion hopes. Deals completed by the Red Dragons included the club record-breaking signing of Reading top scorer Sam Smith.

Former Premier League striker Jay Rodridguez also joined Phil Parkinson's side from Burnley after the 35-year-old was said to have been offered a financial package worth £15,000 per week. Hull City winger Ryan Longman arrived in North Wales as well earlier last month.

One star who was consistently linked with Wrexham in January, but did not end up signing, was Leeds United forward Bamford. However, former Sky Sports presenter Bryn Law has questioned the accuracy of the rumours.

The lifelong Wrexham fan, who commentates on Leeds games for the Championship club's in-house media channel, was recently asked whether he thought a move for the 31-year-old was ever on the cards. Despite his doubts, Law told the Welsh Beast Sports podcast he believes reports of Wrexham's interest in another Leeds striker may have had more validity.

He said: "Nobody has told me anything, but if I was asked on instinct, I don't think it (signing Bamford) was a possibility. It didn't sound right to me and I don't think that would have happened. I think there might have been some interest in Joe Gelhardt.

"The problem was that Patrick got injured in the midst of any speculation that was flying around anyway so that was the end of that and he's still injured. I got asked every time I went to Elland Road, but I didn't ever have a sense it was going to happen."

Bamford, who made one appearance for the England national team in 2021, hasn't started a single game for Leeds this season. He also failed to score in any of his 10 substitute appearances, before suffering a hamstring injury in January which has kept him out for the last five weeks.

Meanwhile, Gelhardt ultimately ended up joining Hull City on loan last month and has so far scored once in his four appearances for the Tigers. Despite Bamford's latest injury setback, Leeds boss Daniel Farke has refused to write him off, with more than a year still left on his contract.

Farke has underlined how much value he places in the striker on several occasions, according to Leeds Live. Speaking on Thursday, the German manager said: “You need a bit of luck in the final stages in that players are not injured.

"Patrick Bamford was not available last year, having him at the end of the season would have been different and same for Pascal Struijk. To have both unavailable was costly. We hope for better luck this season and that key players are fit and on fire."
