In the WWE world, the words 'don't try this at home' ring in the ears of many young people wanting to copy their favourite moves.

And superstar JD McDonagh can attest to that after he suffered severe injuries during WWE Monday Night Raw. The Irishman was wrestling in Tuesday morning’s opening match, live on Netflix, as he teamed up with fellow Judgment Day star Dominik Mysterio against the War Raiders’ Erik and Ivar for the World Tag Team Championships.

The match was hanging in balance when the 24-year-old pulled off a crazy springboard moonsault to the outside of the ring on Ivar. He hit his mark, but his momentum carried him forward, and his back clattered into the announce table. WWE commentator Michael Cole was quick to alert the doctors to his injury and signalled they would need to step in.

Incredibly McDonagh somehow finished the match after he was checked by the ringside doctor during the commercial break. He earned himself a huge round of applause from the arena crowd as he was quickly taken to hospital. While his neck appeared to whiplash against the desk, McDonagh revealed on X: "First off, thanks to everyone for the messages and the concern. I’m good. I’ve got a couple of broken ribs and a punctured lung, so I’m going to be out for a couple months. All things considered, it could have been a lot worse, so I’m grateful for that. See ya in a bit."

Former WWE wrestler and concussion expert, Chris Nowinski PhD, said: "I hope JD McDonagh remains OK and doesn't develop delayed symptoms after this incredible impact. Shout out to Michael Cole on commentary for shoot calling for the ringside doctor to check on JD after seeing his head strike the table from only feet away."

Some of the biggest stars in wrestling have continued a match after suffering a concussion. Triple H lost to Curtis Axel 2013 after a head injury and could barely remember most of the match.
