Xabi Alonso: I've dreamt of one day managing Liverpool - but first I must prove myself

Xabi Alonso has said he’s “dreamt” of managing Liverpool in the future but admits “first I have to prove myself”.

The Spaniard spent five seasons at Anfield, during which time he won the Champions League and FA Cup with the north-west club.

After making 143 league appearances for Liverpool, the midfielder eventually left for Real Madrid in 2009.

Having retired from the professional game last year, the 35-year-old now holds hopes of moving into management.

When asked if he has ever dreamt of taking charge of Liverpool at Anfield, Alonso told Sky Sports: “Yes for sure, I have dreamt of that, but first I have to prove myself and prepare.

“If I decide somewhere along the way to take my chances as a manager, my link, my commitment, my passion with Liverpool is there.

"Why not? We will see if we can cross paths in our ways.”

With Steven Gerrard currently head coach of Liverpool’s U18 side, Alonso believes that his former teammate will beat him to the position of manager at Anfield.

“I think that Stevie will go earlier than me for sure, it’s the natural way,” he said.

“Steve is already there so it’s going to be sooner rather than later I guess.”
