York Closed Table Tennis Championship sees 79 players compete for 22 trophies
79 PLAYERS competed for 22 trophies at this year's York Closed Table Tennis Championships, sponsored by GMBU, at the York RI Gymnasium on the opening weekend of February.
Filip Wojtkowiak (York RI) won the Singles title for the first time, and 16-year-old Mia Longman (Coneysthorpe) retained the Ladies’ Singles title.
Filip, who was seeded two, beat fourth seed Calum Goodwin (Coneysthorpe) in the final by three games to nil.
Filip raced into a 6-0 lead in the first game, going on to win it 11-3.
Calum came back well and the second and third games were very close, both going to deuce and won by Filip 15-13 and 13-11.
In the semi-finals Filip defeated unseeded Aidan Ranftler (Clarence WMC) 3-0, and Calum beat top-seed Mikey Arnold (Shiyi Ling) 3-1.
In a repeat of last year’s Ladies’ Singles final Mia came back from a game down to defeat Debbie Scott (Shiyi Ling) 3-1.
The pair teamed up to win the Ladies’ Doubles, beating Emilie Guilloux and Annabel Sweeney (University) 3-0 in the final.
Mia also won the Mixed Doubles with team-mate Martin Lowe. They defeated last year’s winners, Debbie Scott and Mikey Arnold, 3-0 in the final.
Mia is from Scarborough and plays for Coneysthorpe in the York League. She is ranked 7th under 17-girl, 13th under-19 girl, 26th under-21 woman and 55th senior woman in England.
Mikey Arnold and team-mate Ben Lockyer won the Men’s Doubles. They were runners-up last year but went one better this time, beating Filip Wojtkowiak and team-mate Josh Bramley in a very close final by 12-10 in the deciding fifth game.
Mia met her Coneysthorpe and Scarborough team-mate Louis Fell in the final of the Junior Singles, with Louis winning by 3-0.
Julian Priest (Wigginton) beat Henry Hollings (York TTA Coaching) in a repeat of last year’s Cadet Singles final 3-0.
The Under-11s Singles was won by last year’s runner-up Nate Merrill (York TTA Coaching and Appleton Roebuck School). He beat younger brother Sammy in the final.
Nate teamed up with Mia to win the Junior Doubles, beating Louis and Thomas Souter (Wigginton) in the final.
Martin Lowe retained the Veterans (over-40s) Singles title, defeating Cris Carcamo (Topspin) in the final by 3-1.
Martin and Filip also retained the Veterans Doubles title, beating Cris and Paul Eastwood (Shiyi Ling) 3-1 in the final.
Richard McCarthy won the Over-55's Singles title, beating his York RI team-mate Richard Crowther 3-1 in the final.
The Over-70's Singles was retained by Terry Nicholson (Clarence WMC), who beat Bob Young (BT) 3-0 in the final.

The Division One Singles was won by Filip Wojtkowiak.
Josh Bramley had to retire due to injury during the final.
Daniel Nicholson (Shiyi Ling) won the Division Two Singles, beating Des Healey (Wigginton) in the final.
Harry Male (Wigginton), Kevin Prime (Wilberfoss) and William Mutch (University) won the Division 3, 4 and 5 Singles events respectively.
Cris Carcamo won the Handicap Singles.
Richard Church (Topspin) and Ben Lockyer won the Handicap Doubles.
Adam Stone (York RI) won the Mixed Plate, for players knocked out in the first round of the Singles and Ladies’ Singles.
