Carlisle United 0 Morecambe 8: A young Carlisle side were ruthlessly punished by a Morecambe side full of senior pros in the Central League Cup.

The visitors ran up eight goals against United's academy players at Penrith's Frenchfield Park.

Marcus Dackers hit a hat-trick while Paul Lewis and former Blues striker Hallam Hope got two apiece, Harvey Macadam also on target for Morecambe.

It was a harsh lesson for Carlisle's teenagers as the Blues opted not to field any of their own professionals in the second string encounter.

Morecambe, by contrast, involved the likes of Yann Songo’o, David Tutonda and Paul and Adam Lewis in their side, and the former Carlisle duo Tom White and Hope on the bench.

The visitors lined up against a Blues side for whom third-year scholar Aran Fitzpatrick, back from injury, was the most senior face, Mark Birch’s youth team otherwise making up the XI and bench.

Morecambe’s assistant manager Danny Grainger, the former United captain, was with the Shrimps, as was boss Derek Adams, with Blues head coach Mike Williamson back at Brunton Park overseeing first-team training.

Carlisle were overseen by under-18 coaches Birch and Jamie Devitt.

The young United side were opened up early on and Morecambe led from the fourth minute as Carlisle struggled to deal with a free-kick, and as it was hooked back into the box, Dackers got the wrong side of Freddie O’Donoghue to slot past keeper Casey Sillitoe.

Dackers almost set up a second for Paul Lewis before Carlisle came close to equalising after a good spell of possession was followed by James Murray’s positive run, O’Donoghue then turning and shooting, drawing a good save from Harry Burgoyne.

The visitors then applied more pressure in the United half, Charlie Brown and Paul Lewis denied by blocks and United struggling to make inroads into the Shrimps’ territory.

The visitors then pounced repeatedly on Carlisle errors to increase their lead.

First, United lost the ball in midfield as Adam Lewis swept down the left to cross for namesake Paul to tap in.

After O’Donoghue had a deflected attempt saved for United, and Morecambe had been forced into a change with Brown replaced by Macadam, a penalty allowed Dackers to add to his tally.

Morecambe then made it four when Paul Lewis broke into space on the right and crossed for Dackers, whose finish wrongfooted Sillitoe.

And a fifth came four minutes from the break as the visitors won the ball back after a Carlisle free-kick, and a far-post cross was turned in by Macadam.

A triple change at the break for Morecambe included the former United frontman Hope introduced, while Sillitoe denied Callum Jones at the start of the second half.

Yet the sixth was not long in coming as Paul Lewis had space to control a cross before rifling past Sillitoe.

And then, after Fitzpatrick and Bobby Skinner were replaced by Tai Bell and Lewis Lambert, the punishment continued as Hope scored from close range to make it 7-0.

White came on for Morecambe and then Amaru Smith was introduced by United for O’Donoghue, who came close to a consolation when Jamie Hodgson drove down the left and fed Lambert, whose shot on the turn was blocked.

Blues coach Devitt was warned by the referee over his comments from the touchline, before Carlisle’s final change saw Will Rafferty replace Simon Rigby.

Fellow sub Smith was denied a penalty after pouncing on a loose ball, while Hope headed against the crossbar as Morecambe looked for an eighth.

At the other end Dan Hopper’s shot was saved by the visiting keeper, Carlisle offering a more competitive performance in the last half-hour, while the Blues were aggrieved that an aerial challenge on substitute Bell went unpunished.

That saw tempers fray somewhat in the closing stages, before Morecambe’s eighth came four minutes from time as Songo’o broke onside and was tripped in the box by Sillitoe, Hope hammering home the penalty to round off the scoring.
