Zara Tindall has teased she could make a sensational Olympic Games return after 20 years away.

Tindall, the daughter of Princess Anne and 21st in line to the throne, previously won a silver medal in the team equestrian event at London 2012. She had previously been forced to pull out of the 2008 Beijing Games after her horse suffered an injury, having suffered a similar setback that ruled her out of Athens four years earlier.

However, on a trip to Australia's Gold Coast for the annual Magic Millions horse racing event, the 43-year-old says she has not ruled out making a stunning return to the Olympics at the Brisbane Games in 2032.

“I’d love to run another Olympics,” she said. “But I’m very lucky even if I don’t – I got to ride at my home Olympics.”

If she really were to make her comeback in eight years time, Tindall would be 51 when competing at the Games. However, that would still leave her some way behind fellow equestrian Nick Skelton, who became Great Britain's oldest ever gold medallist when he triumphed in Rio at the age of 58.

Any return to action would be supported by her husband and former England rugby captain Mike Tindall, who has accompanied her on the trip to Australia. The couple have been married since 2011, having met in Sydney during the Rugby World Cup three years earlier, and now share three children - Mia, Lena and Lucas - together.

However, while Tindall is a legend of English rugby and is keen to encourage his children to follow their own sporting ambitions, he says he has never been tempted to follow his wife and saddle up. Asked if he had ever learnt to ride a horse in an interview with Hello! magazine last year, the 46-year-old said: "No! It would be a bit like asking Zara to learn to play rugby.

"I know she does it with the kids, but I think we'd argue if she was trying to teach me to ride – and I would probably be a tough student."

But Tindall added: "We're no different to other parents and our weekends end up being about the kids and getting them to their sports. It's a mixture of rugby, hockey, swimming, gymnastics.

"I think sport gives so many things to kids, whether it's learning how to be a team member or determination. It has given Zara and me so much that we want to expose them to as many sports as we can."
