It isn’t just the World Cup being talking about on The 32, Harry Redknapp gave us the full story behind his most famous summer story of all.

The former West Ham manager recalled the day he got so fed up of the stick he was getting from a fan that he brought him on as a sub during a pre-season game.

The 1994 friendly between the Hammers and Oxford City will always be remembered for irate supporter Steve Davies getting more than he bargained for.

Redknapp told the tale on Yahoo Sport’s brilliant daily World Cup show where he was a special guest for the big finale.

“We were playing Oxford City and there was a guy next to my dug out – from the first minute he was giving me real grief,” he explained.

“He was a big West Ham fan, tattoos and West Ham ear-rings, the lot. He was shouting at me that we had to get rid of Lee Chapman, he wasn’t good enough and saying he’s a donkey.

“This fella wouldn’t leave me alone, 40 minutes he went on for – non stop.

“I only took four subs with me and we had used them all. Then we got an injury. This bloke was still going on, we were 3-0 up so I look and him and say ‘oi, can you play as good as you talk?’

“He turned around and said ‘well I’m better than that Chapman’ so I told him to get his boots on. He said he didn’t have any, so we found him some.

“The kitman took him to the dressing room and next thing know he’s waddling down the touchline and has the full West Ham kit on!

“He want to know where he’s playing so I ask ‘where do you play!’ – he said ‘up front’ and I say go on then!”

Redknapp added: “Then this guy comes down from the public address box and asks who it is as he’s not on the teamsheet. I said ‘who’s the sub? Haven’t you been watching the World Cup? It’s the Bulgarian, Titche Shiev’.

“Then he actually said to me ‘oh right, I thought it was him!’

“So I put this bloke up front, he scores and it turns out he was better than Lee Chapman!”
