£50m stumbling block, midfield exits - what to expect from Man City on transfer deadline day
Manchester City enter the final day of the January transfer window having already spent more than £125million.
It is an unprecedented spend by the club in a winter window and reflects the difficulties the Blues have endured in recent months. Pep Guardiola's side have had to contend with a lengthy injury list while a loss of form at the end of 2024 has all but put pay to their Premier League title defence and threatened to see them knocked out of the Champions League at the first hurdle.
They did exit the Carabao Cup but remain in Europe and the FA Cup and are still well placed to make the top four heading into the second half of the campaign. The arrivals of attacker Omar Marmoush and young defensive duo Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis have added depth but City are still light in defensive midfield given Rodri's injury and at right back with Kyle Walker having departed for AC Milan on loan with an option for the Italian side to buy the England international in the summer.

City have an interest in Andrea Cambiaso at Juventus with the Italy international able to play in both full back positions but there was always an acceptance a deal would be difficult to do this month. It is the same situation with Ederson at Atalanta with moves for both unlikely.
Juve midfielder Douglas Luiz has been linked with a return but City would only be interested in a low-key loan that the Serie A side are unlikely to sanction. The Blues have an interest in Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez but are reluctant to pay his £50million release clause making a move for the Spaniard difficult in the final hours of the window.
Perhaps the most likely avenue for transfers is a departure with James McAtee the subject of interest from a host of clubs in Germany. But most wanted to strike a loan, something City can no longer do having filled their overseas quota.
Guardiola does want to sell the academy graduate despite his lack of minutes this season and it remains to be seen whether the right deal for all parties could be struck.
Young midfielder Jacob Wright has interest from Championship club Swansea City, who are seeking a permanent move. The 19-year-old was in South Wales on Sunday as talks accelerate over a deal.
The move is expected to be a loan for the rest of this season, with the Championship club having an obligation to make it permanent in summer providing they stay in the division. The permanent deal is set to be worth around £4million with the Championship club seeking reinforcements having allowed Matt Grimes to leave for Coventry City. Middlesbrough had also been linked with a move for Wright. Other academy exits remain unlikely.
