Adam Wharton: Crystal Palace book medical as £22m fee agreed with Blackburn

The 19-year-old is being allowed to travel to London for his medical as the final terms of a deal, which could rise to £22m with add-ons, are agreed.

Wharton is an England Under-20 international and only signed a four-and-a-half-year contract a month ago, but is now set to move on.

The Eagles sit just five points above the Premier League relegation zone following a run of just one win in 10 games.

Palace want to sign a midfielder after losing Cheick Doucoure to a serious Achilles injury. Doucoure is expected to miss the rest of the season and Palace have targeted Wharton since missing out on Kalvin Phillips, who joined West Ham.

Roy Hodgson denied any knowledge about the signing of Wharton when asked on Monday: “I don’t have any information to give you about him at all.”

Palace have scouted Wharton in person this season. He has played 26 times in the Championship and established himself as a key player at Blackburn under Jon Dahl Tomasson.

Wharton is set to become Palace's second January signing following confirmation on Tuesday of Daniel Munoz's £6.9m arrival from Genk.
