Arne Slot is about to get $122m answer that could solve huge Liverpool transfer dilemma
As European nights go, the clash against PSV Eindhoven is likely not going to go down in history for Liverpool.
Other than the chance to secure top spot in the Champions League’s league phase, there is absolutely nothing riding on Wednesday's result in the Netherlands for the Reds. Arne Slot has clearly recognized as much, and left virtually all his big back guns at home.
There will be no Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah or Luis Diaz on show. Although he tried to play down the significance of their absences, you can bet good money all nine of those names will be starting on Saturday at Bournemouth.

That’s not to say Wednesday's game is a complete write-off. Cody Gakpo is clearly relishing the opportunity to face his old side, having turned down the chance to stay at home with some of his teammates, and there are plenty of youngsters hoping they can catch the eye of their head coach with a view for the future.
And for two of the more senior figures making the journey over to Eindhoven, it could be a particularly big night - one that may even shape the Reds’ plans for the summer. There’s no getting away from the fact that it has been a disappointing season for Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa. The pair, for different reasons, are firmly fifth and sixth in the pecking order when it comes to Liverpool’s attacking options.
For Nunez, a return of just six goals from 29 appearances across all competitions has certainly not laid to rest the concerns over his finishing that have been around since the moment he made the move from Benfica in a club-record $106m (£85m/€101m) deal.
Now in his third year, it does feel as though fans have reached a final verdict on him, and it would be no great surprise to see him move on in the summer. His late double at Brentford recently did show though that he still has a big role to play - the challenge for him now is to make that sort of return the norm, and not an outlier.
As for Chiesa, a $15.6m (£12.5m/€14.9m) transfer from Juventus during the summer seemed like a no-brainer, even if his injury problems left a slight question mark. So far, those fitness issues have perhaps proven to be a bigger issue than anyone might have imagined.
With just eight appearances so far, and just one of those coming from the start, we haven’t seen anything near the player that lit up Euro 2020. Considering he’s vying with Salah for a place on the right, he may well have to make the most of his opportunity on Wednesday - assuming he gets it.
And it’s with Salah in mind that both Nunez and Chiesa need to prove that they can step up for Liverpool. The Egyptian’s future is still up in the air, and if he is to leave Anfield in the summer, that will leave a massive hole in Slot’s squad.
Both Nunez and Chiesa have also been linked with exits, but if Salah does leave, will Liverpool really want to be overhauling its attack so drastically by offloading another two options?
It’s up to these two players tonight then to show they can step up in Salah’s advance, and potentially provide Liverpool with the answer that could solve the biggest of dilemmas in the summer.
