Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he is hoping to see more goals from the No.9 position between now and the end of the season.

The Reds have relied on their wingers to score the majority of goals this season, with Mohamed Salah (26) and Cody Gakpo (16) the highest scorers so far this term. A mixture of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have played through the middle with mixed returns under Slot.

Nunez has only scored six goals all season, Diaz hasn’t netted in his last nine matches and, while Jota got on the scoresheet more consistently, he has struggled with injuries. Hence the reliance on Salah and Gakpo for the first half of the campaign.

But six months into the season, Arne Slot believes the team is starting to get more rewards from its no.9, with Nunez excellent through the middle against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night.

“I think in general we used the no.9 better and better than we maybe did in the beginning of the season,” Slot said ahead of this weekend’s trip to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup fifth round.

“That is the positive thing of playing more games, training more together and having more meetings together – you can highlight that a bit more as well. I think in the beginning of the season we were quite dependent on our wingers, but I see that we are starting to use our no.9 more and more in situations that we have to use him.

“As a result of that these players come in promising positions and they have just as much quality as our wingers. So, if you put Jota in a promising position or if Lucho (Diaz) plays there or Darwin, they will give you what we are all hoping for and that’s goals and assists.”

It comes as speculation mounts on the future of all three attackers. A recent report in Anfield Watch claimed all of Nunez, Diaz and Jota may be available for sale this summer if the price is right, with Slot planning to ‘revamp Liverpool’s attacking options’.
