Liverpool boss Arne Slot has been asked about his side's lack of transfer activity in the winter market quickly pointing out that his roster was already strong, hence the lack of desperation to add to it.

Slot has signed Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili so far since arriving from Feyenoord in the summer but Liverpool didn't make a mid-season move. Other clubs, including Manchester City and Aston Villa, were scrambling to bring in multiple new stars for big money in either a transfer fee or wages.

"Maybe there aren't many managers with as good a squad as I have," Slot said when it was put to him that most Premier League bosses are keen on new additions. "The players have shown the trust we have in them was correct.

"We don't have many long-term injuries. We did have some with Alisson, Jota, others. But other than Trent, they are all ready today so there was no reason to add to the team unless there's a chance in the market. We saw that with the goalkeeper we brought in (Mamardashvili in the summer)."

Liverpool is working on potential arrivals ahead of the summer with left-back among the positions that appears to be a priority. It was never likely to do much in January unless something came up that couldn't be missed.

In addition to left-back, Liverpool might also need a number nine in the summer. Luis Diaz has been playing that role lately, with Diogo Jota injury-prone and Darwin Nunez showing a lack of consistency. Slot was also asked about what it is he wants from his central striker with Diaz, Jota and Nunez all very different options.

"I will be happy if that player (No.9) becomes both," Slot said. "I want him to be a facilitator nice word! — and to score goals himself. Lucho played his part for Cody [Gakpo] to win a penalty against Bournemouth, so in the end, you want attackers and midfielders to score.

"We need to get goals from many positions, including center-backs who can score from set-pieces as well. So we work on the pitch and give them feedback to make the team better. The No.9 should be a facilitator and also score goals."

Liverpool.com says: Signings in the winter can give you a boost but Liverpool has the strongest squad in the league. Doing something that would inhibit it in the summer when more players will be available and on the market would not be sensible and is simply not the way that Liverpool does things. For now, Slot can be content with the options he has.
