Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta missed his former team Everton's dramatic late equalizer against rivals Liverpool in the last Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park.

During his playing days, Arteta spent eight seasons at the Toffees and even captained David Moyes' side. Now rivaling Liverpool as the manager of the Reds' Premier League title rivals, Arsenal, Arteta was keeping an eye on affairs in the Merseyside Derby.

Until the 98th minute, it looked like Liverpool would take advantage of its game in hand over the Gunners thanks to goals by Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah after Beto's 11th-minute opener. However, defender James Tarkowski channeled his inner Phil Jagielka and smashed a well-placed shot past Alisson to snatch a point, sending Goodison Park wild.

Moyes' men had done their former player and captain Arteta a favor, but the Spaniard has admitted he missed Tarkowski's dramatic equalizer as his iPad lost connection. "I'd better not tell you the story of what happened," Arteta said. "No, no, no. It was a funny one because I lost connection in that moment. I was watching the iPad, and I lost the connection. We didn't know exactly what was going on.

"That's the beauty of football, that uncertainty and the fact that for everybody, and it's not the first time, for everybody it's really difficult to win matches in this league. That's why always the hope and the ambition is there because to do it consistently for 10 months is a very, very, very long league."

After the game, tensions reached boiling point. Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure jeering at the Liverpool fans in the away section provoked a reaction from Reds academy ace Curtis Jones, and a pushing and shoving match ensued. Referee Michael Oliver had no choice but to give both players a second yellow card and a sending-off, which would carry a one-game suspension.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot also received a red card for protesting with Oliver after the full-time whistle. Slot will now serve a two-game ban, with Arsenal just seven points behind the Reds. "Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was dismissed at the end of the Merseyside derby for using offensive, insulting, or abusive language. He is handed a two-match touchline ban as a result," a now-deleted statement read.

"The emotions got the better of me," Slot conceded. "If I could it differently, I would love to. I would hope to do it differently next time. There were many things that happened in extra-time that led me to being emotional but there is a process now which I have to respect so I won't go into details (into what was said).

"There was a VAR check and then five minutes of extra-time ended up as eight minutes, a lot of things happened that led me to be emotional but it wouldn't be smart to go into every incident."
