Arsenal just blew its big transfer deadline day chance as Liverpool knows key to title
Just like it was 24 hours ago, it’s as you were for Liverpool and Arsenal. Transfer deadline day has come and gone without either of the Premier League’s top two making any significant moves.
So, who does that benefit? Well, it surely has to be the side sitting six points ahead with a game in hand.
There can be no doubt now that it’s now a two-horse race for this season’s title. Even with Manchester City splashing the cash again over the last month or so, it will take a monumental collapse from Liverpool and Arsenal and a near-perfect run from Pep Guardiola’s side to bring them back into the reckoning.

So it’s now just a question of whether Arsenal can close that gap to Liverpool. You feel like they may have already missed a golden opportunity to claw back some momentum, even after that demolition of City on Sunday.
Both Arne Slot and Mikel Arteta have areas in their squads that could do with bolstering. Some defensive reinforcements, especially on the left, wouldn’t have gone amiss at Anfield, while the Gunners are in need of a proven goalscorer.
With ground to make up, Arsenal’s need was the more pressing of the two clubs. Even with a goal to show for his efforts against City, Kai Havertz still showed why he can’t be the answer for Arteta, and not signing a new striker may well prove to be something the Gunners are left to rue.
Of course, the same could be said for Liverpool not signing a new defender. There has certainly been no shortage of reminders for them, with Jamie Carragher among those who have urged the Reds to make some sort of move.
But a new defender would have been something of a luxury for Slot to have during the remainder of the season. Even with a new center-back, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate would have remained the first-choice pairing at the heart of the backline, and it would have been a brave call to bring a new left-back into the team midway through the season, especially with experienced options like Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas already in place.
And while there are plenty of doubts about where the goals that could lead Arsenal to overtake Liverpool are going to come from, there is absolutely no doubt about the Reds’ supply.
Mohamed Salah, as he has so often proved to be already this season, looks as though he could well be the difference in this season’s title race. Showing no signs of slowing down – even at 32 and with doubts over his future – the Egyptian has the potential to turn a quiet window into a good one for Liverpool, and a disastrous one for Arsenal.
