Jamie Carragher has told Liverpool it needs to target three specific areas in the summer as it looks set to end the January transfer window without any new signings. The former defender though is placing his trust in the club’s owners to do the business later in the year.

As the clock ticks down on deadline day, Liverpool looks unlikely to make any late additions. The only deals expected from the Reds are the exits of Jayden Danns and Kaide Gordon on loan, with the pair set to join Sunderland and Portsmouth respectively, while there could be a late move to Middlesbrough for Tyler Morton (as per The Times’ Paul Joyce).

It would mark another quiet window for Liverpool after Federico Chiesa was the only player to join Arne Slot’s squad during the summer. A deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili was also completed, although the goalkeeper won’t complete his switch from Valencia until later this year.

With the Reds in the midst of a Premier League title challenge, and also still in the race for the Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup, not making any new signings could be seen as something of a gamble by FSG. Carragher though insists he has faith in Liverpool’s owners to get it right - although he feels there are three obvious areas for the club to target.

"There’s definitely areas of Liverpool’s team that can be really improved. But I think that is something for the summer,” Carragher told Sky Sports. "Center-forward is a position they could really improve in. I think attacking midfield is another one. A left-sided defender too.

"If those players were available right now, I’m not sure they would do the attacking ones because they have enough numbers there. But I think they need to sign a left-back – or a left-sided center-back or left-back – but I am sure they will come in the summer.

"But for me, I have that much trust over what these guys tend to do over the last eight to ten years. Even if I think they should buy, I look at the operation at Liverpool and go: they know more than me.

"Every fan gets excited about players coming in – I would love Liverpool to sign another defender – but I trust these people know what they’re doing because their track record says they do."

Liverpool.com says: An attacking midfielder is a bit of an odd choice from Carragher, considering Liverpool already has Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott to play there. Surely a new No.6 is a bigger priority?

In any case, Carragher’s trust will be tested over the remainder of this season. If Liverpool doesn’t go on to win the title, there will be serious questions asked of FSG’s approach to transfers over the past 12 months.
