How Chelsea must overhaul squad: Keep Raheem Sterling; loan Romeo Lavia; stuck with Mykhailo Mudryk
Chelsea are braced for another summer of change.
There is uncertainty over the long-term future of manager Mauricio Pochettino after Sunday's Carabao Cup Final defeat to Liverpool, and the Blues face their latest overhaul of a squad labelled by Gary Neville as "billion-pound bottle jobs".
Reports that Premier League rivals believe Chelsea need to raise around £100million by June 30 to avoid running into profitability and sustainability trouble complicate the picture. Chelsea deny that and stress any early sales would be made with a view to new signings, but failure to qualify for Europe would further squeeze their budget.
The Blues will look to raise money by selling players who are out on loan at the moment. They will earn £28m from Newcastle's obligation to buy Lewis Hall, selling Romelu Lukaku to Saudi Arabia could earn them more than £35m, while they inserted a £35m release clause into Ian Maatsen's contract when they loaned him to Borussia Dortmund and will hope it is triggered. Armando Broja is also set to be sold at the end of his loan spell at Fulham, but there could be other significant departures.
Here, Standard Sport assesses which players Chelsea should keep, offload or might be stuck with after handing them long-term contracts on big money.
Goalkeepers
Djordje Petrovic: The de facto No1 cost only £14million last summer and has been a consistent performer. Not a top-class goalkeeper yet, but there is plenty to work with. KEEP
Robert Sanchez: Never looked convincing before he lost his place in the team. Faces an uncertain future, but it might be tough for Chelsea to recoup the £25m they paid Brighton last summer. SELL
Marcus Bettinelli: A solid and experienced third-choice option. Known to be a positive influence in the squad and would count as a homegrown player if the Blues qualify for Europe. KEEP
Defenders
Thiago Silva: Loved at Chelsea, but the 39-year-old is beginning to look his age. His contract expires in the summer and Chelsea are looking to the future. RELEASE
Marc Cucurella: Could be the fall guy if Chelsea sign a new left-back. Has struggled to live up to his £65m price tag. SELL
Levi Colwill: Tipped to be a future star for both Chelsea and England, the 20-year-old is not for sale despite interest from big Premier League rivals. KEEP
Reece James: When fit, arguably Chelsea's best player. If the injury-prone captain, who has played just nine games this season, can get on the pitch regularly, then he could help transform their fortunes. KEEP
Wesley Fofana: Has unfortunately spent too much time out with serious injuries. Doubtful Chelsea will get any offers for the £75m signing, but they would surely entertain any bids that do arise. SELL
Axel Disasi: Has emerged as the new leader of Chelsea's defence, and the £38.6m signing looks set to play a key role next season, despite the club's search for another centre-back. KEEP
Benoit Badiashile: Has been poor this season and needs to improve his performances after losing his place in the team. He is young, however, and showed some promise during the last campaign. KEEP
Malo Gusto: One of Chelsea's best performers this season. There is real excitement about the 20-year-old, who has stepped up at right-back in the absence of James. KEEP
Ben Chilwell: This season has certainly not been his best, but he remains one of the leaders in the dressing room and is likely to be key to any revival. KEEP
Trevoh Chalobah: Has done little wrong since first breaking into the Chelsea team, but could be one of the academy players to be sold and faces an uncertain future. SELL
Midfielders
Conor Gallagher: His future depends on whether he and Chelsea agree a new contract in the coming months and how much the club can raise through other sales. On performances alone, he should stay. KEEP
Enzo Fernandez: Has yet to justify his £106.8m price-tag, but has shown flashes of brilliance and could eventually become a world-class leader of the team. KEEP
Moises Caicedo: Has underwhelmed since his £115m move from Brighton last summer, but remains a key part of the long-term plans at Stamford Bridge. KEEP
Romeo Lavia: Made one substitute appearance since his £53m arrival last summer and a loan move could help get his career back on track after his injury nightmare. LOAN
Carney Chukwuemeka: Despite playing just 188 minutes in seven appearances this season, has shown he belongs at this level and has been missed when injured. KEEP
Lesley Ugochukwu: The 19-year-old looked a little out of his depth and was perhaps a signing Chelsea never needed. LOAN
Forwards
Raheem Sterling: Still yet to win over Chelsea fans, despite being a solid performer. His experience, goals and tactical awareness make him someone Chelsea need to stick around. KEEP
Cole Palmer: The star performer and one of the few players exempt from criticism this season. After 12 goals and nine assists, his £42.5m price tag looks a bargain. KEEP
Mykhailo Mudryk: Patience must be wearing thin with the £88.5m signing. Was terrible after coming off the bench at Wembley and is arguably struggling more than anyone else. STUCK WITH
Christopher Nkunku: Injuries have wrecked his season, but he remains Chelsea's great hope, having scored some good goals and shown genuine quality when fit. KEEP
Nicolas Jackson: Question marks remain over whether he can take Blues to next level, but he more than merits a squad place. KEEP
Noni Madueke: Could do with a loan move. Has had flashes of brilliance, but has also been frustrating during a stop-start first full season at Stamford Bridge. LOAN
