Chelsea will let Renato Veiga leave only on permanent deal amid Borussia Dortmund talks
Chelsea value Renato Veiga at more than £20 million and are adamant he will leave the club only on a permanent transfer this month.
Veiga is said to have agreed to join Borussia Dortmund during the current transfer window, with the German club now hoping to negotiate a loan move for the player.
But sources insist that Veiga will not be loaned out and that Chelsea will only consider selling him this month if their valuation is met.
Veiga, who can play in defence and midfield, joined Chelsea for £12 million from Swiss club FC Basel in the summer but the club believe that, including add-ons, he would now be worth over £20 million.
Chelsea have not been actively trying to sell Veiga, but the 21-year-old is understood to be eager to play more regular football.
Veiga keen to establish Portugal place
It is also thought that Veiga is keen to cement his place in the Portugal team in time for the 2026 World Cup and may feel he has more chance of doing so away from Stamford Bridge.
Veiga played 90 minutes in Chelsea’s FA Cup third-round victory over League Two side Morecambe, which was his first appearance for the club since the Uefa Conference League success against Shamrock Rovers on December 19.
He has made seven appearances in the Premier League for Chelsea, the last of which was as an 89th-minute substitute against Tottenham Hotspur.
Selling Veiga in January could force Chelsea to look at signing a back-up left-back as the utility man has been used as Marc Cucurella’s deputy on a number of occasions.
Chelsea could fund a move for a central defender with a host of sales this month as the club weigh up a number of options, including Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi.
Guéhi is one of a number of defenders Chelsea are considering and it is believed the club have made checks on Palace’s valuation of the player.
Re-signing Guéhi would be a difficult and expensive option for Chelsea, but it has not yet been discounted.
Another option available to Chelsea is to activate a call-back on Trevoh Chalobah, who is on loan at Palace, although selling him permanently to the Selhurst Park club would free up funds to pursue targets.
It remains to be seen whether Chalobah would want to join Palace permanently this month, as he may be reluctant to return to Chelsea, where he lost his squad number and trained away from the first team during the summer.
Dewsbury-Hall, Disasi and Chukwuemeka up for sale
Among the players Chelsea are open to bids for are midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka, who has a £40 million release clause and has also interested Borussia Dortmund.
Defender Axel Disasi, who does not fit head coach Enzo Maresca’s style of play, could be allowed to leave, while midfielder Cesare Casadei, whom Chelsea rate at more than £20 million, has interest from Italy, the Netherlands and France.
It is hoped that left-back Ben Chilwell will get a move this month and Chelsea are prepared to loan him out in order to help the 28-year-old get some regular football.
Forward Christopher Nkunku, who scored his 13th goal of the season against Morecambe, is also thought to be open to a move away from Stamford Bridge – either this month or in the summer.
Chelsea would most likely listen to offers for Nkunku, given João Félix can fill in as a false nine and Marc Guiu is progressing well. It is unclear whether Nkunku’s exit would prompt the club to look at signing a new striker this month.
