'Would be crazy' - Liverpool sent Gabriel Jesus transfer message after Arsenal exit links

Gabriel Jesus of Arsenal

Liverpool have been told by one of their former players why it would be a good idea to sign Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal.

The Reds are already being linked with several potential new signings ahead of what is expected to be Arne Slot's first summer transfer window. With that will come speculation about which players could be added to the Liverpool squad as the post-Jurgen Klopp era begins.

Jesus' future at Arsenal has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks. The Brazilian was linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium last month, although Gunners boss Mikel Arteta dismissed the speculation when asked about the possibility of Jesus leaving the club this summer.

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has explained why he thinks Liverpool would be open to the idea of signing Jesus, should Arsenal decide to sell the striker. The Gunners have been linked with a host of potential new forward which has led to speculation that Jesus could depart this summer.

"Yes, definitely," Johnson told Betfred when asked if he thinks Liverpool should make a move to sign Jesus.

"I would be surprised if Arsenal do actually want to sell him because I think that would be crazy. If he does become available, either Chelsea or Liverpool should bite their arm off.

"He’s not going to get you 25 goals a season, but he’s going to be a big part of the team and he works his socks off. In front of goal, he’s going to score a lot of goals at a club like that where he’ll get a lot of opportunities.

"If Arsenal do let him go, then Chelsea and Liverpool should absolutely jump at the chance."

Liverpool currently have five senior forward options at the club with Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota. Nunez and Diaz's futures have been the subject of debate in recent weeks, while Jota has struggled with injury this term.

Jesus has also endured a difficult season with injuries at Arsenal. The striker has scored just eight goals in all competitions this term but has missed 13 games across the campaign due to various injuries.

Liverpool have Nunez, Jota and Gakpo who are all capable of performing in the centre-forward role. It remains to be seen what expected incoming manager Arne Slot will have planned both for the transfer market and for the existing members of the Reds squad this summer.
