David Moyes confirms key Everton player should be back to face Liverpool in injury boost
Everton manager David Moyes has confirmed Vitaliy Mykolenko is back in training ahead of the Merseyside derby and should be available to face Liverpool.
The left-back has started 21 of the Toffees’ Premier League 23 matches this season but was not available at the weekend against Bournemouth due to a calf injury. After sitting out the FA Cup loss, David Moyes said he is hopeful the defender will be back for the final-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday.
“He [Mykolenko] has started some training today so hopefully he could be available. That’s probably the main one,” the Everton boss said in his pre-match press conference.

Moyes also confirmed that Everton will be without Seamus Coleman against Liverpool with the experienced Irishman struggling with a lower leg injury. He joins a packed injury list that includes Nathan Patterson, Orel Mangala, Dwight McNeil, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti.
Meanwhile, it’s set to be an emotional night at Goodison, with Everton desperate to inflict a title blow to Arne Slot’s side in one of its final home matches at the old ground.
“It’s a big game and I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully the players will too,” said Moyes. “All we need is our supporters behind us which they have been. Since I’ve come back in they have been absolutely brilliant. They were great again at the weekend even though we weren’t at our best. They have to enjoy it as well and they want to see their team win more than anything.
“We don’t have many games left and I know everybody in the stadium is doing their best to make it really memorable, and partly for everybody who watches football as well. The media as well, we want to put on a great spectacle and hopefully a good game.”
The Scotsman is also set to face a 23rd Merseyside derby, nearly 12 years from his last involvement in the fixture.
“I’ve been here many years, but it's been a while since I’ve had my last Merseyside derby but they’ve always been difficult games. Liverpool have always been a tough opponent, but at Goodison it always felt a lot easier because we had the support of our fans behind us and we had a fantastic crowd. I think this game will be no different.
“I’ve been involved in some of these Merseide derbies when it has been incredible when it was Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard and it was a case of ‘who is going to kick who first?’ I have big memories from that but I think games aren’t played in such a fashion. I think the refereeing is different these days but it’s a great derby and a brilliant game over the years.”
