Edwin van der Sar sends classy message to Man United star after Ruben Amorim recall decision
Edwin van der Sar has backed Andre Onana to excel at Manchester United - despite his position as the club's first-choice goalkeeper once again being questioned.
The 28-year-old has often come under criticism for his performances, including a horror mistake in the 3-1 defeat to Brighton where he gifted their third goal by spilling a low cross into the path of Georginio Rutter. As a result, Ruben Amorim omitted him for the Europa League win against Rangers.
At the time, head coach Amorim explained it was simply due to rotation. "When you have a game on Thursday and a very difficult match on Sunday, we have to use all the players, if not it's impossible to play at the same level, fresh without injuries," he told MUTV.

"They have to be ready for every match, so it's an opportunity for everybody to play and try to win."
Onana kept a clean sheet upon returning to the starting XI in the 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday afternoon. It will be interesting to see whether Amorim opts to start Altay Bayindir in this week's European clash.
One-time United goalkeeper van der Sar, who was on punditry duty for TNT Sports at Craven Cottage, showed his support for Onana. Taking to Instagram, the United great shared a picture of him next to Onana as he wrote: "What a guy, Andre Onana," followed by three applause emojis.
The Dutch goalkeeper represented both United and Fulham with distinction during his illustrious career, making 420 appearances combined for both clubs. He was also present at Craven Cottage to pay tribute to both teams.
Following the 1-0 win, United climbed to 12th place in the table - and are now just five points off ninth-placed Brighton, who fell to defeat against Everton last weekend. United's focus will turn to their final Europa League game against FCSB in Bucharest on Thursday night. United are fourth in the European standings - and are well-positioned to finish among the top eight in the 36-team table.
