There are no shortage of transfer questions surrounding Liverpool ahead of the next season and for all the success so far in Arne Slot ’s first season, the team could look very different next term.

The obvious reason is because Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah may still leave, while there’s uncertainty about Andy Robertson’s long-term future as first-choice left-back. Darwin Nunez has also been linked with an exit, while it’s likely this summer will see several incomings, in comparison to the quiet window last year.

But perhaps the forgotten selection quandary that Slot could face next season is what happens with his goalkeepers. Alisson has been the Premier League’s standout stopper for several years but will face competition from Giorgi Mamardashvili, who Liverpool signed in a deal worth up to £29m ($36m) last summer, but opted to defer his arrival at Anfield for 12 months.

Whether the 20-year-old will be able to oust Alisson next season looks unlikely and what it means for the long-term future of Caoimhin Kelleher is also uncertain.

The long-term plan remains unclear given Alisson is still such a dependable figure, but it’s also difficult to imagine an expensive outlay remain as back-up. It’s a can Liverpool somewhat kicked down the road last summer, as evidenced by a recent conversation between Mamardashvili and Ferran Torres over the weekend.

Ferran Torres and Giorgi Mamardashvili's post-match conversation was picked up by TV cameras after last weekend's Le Liga game.

Footage captured by DAZN’s cameras after Barcelona’s win over Valencia showed the ex-Manchester City forward, who scored in the 7-1 victory, asking Mamardashvili why he didn’t move last summer, to which the Valencia goalkeeper replied: “Alisson.”

That the idea of replacing the Brazilian this season was viewed as impossible underlines how complex the goalkeeping situation is. Meanwhile, Mamardashvili conceding seven for a Valencia side sitting 19th in the table is far from ideal, although the goalkeeper’s clean sheet percentage is the second highest in La Liga this season.

Liverpool.com says: You’d imagine there is a plan for the goalkeeping department - it would be unlikely FSG to operate without one. That probably involves Alisson remaining as no.1 next season and Mamardashvili playing back-up, before the Georgian is given the leading role ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Kelleher must surely move on, he’s far too good to remain as third-choice goalkeeper.
