Gossip: Conte 'retains Chelsea backing', Zidane 'future in doubt', PSG 'want Pochettino', Everton 'pay Dyche release fee'
Forget player transfer gossip; all the hottest action right now is about managers. In fact, there are probably some teams who will bring in as many new managers this season as they do new signings.
Three Premier League bosses have already been booted out in the first quarter of the season, but who will be next?
Not Antonio Conte, according to the Mirror, which says the Italian “retains the backing” of the Chelsea board despite his side’s hilariously bad defensive display at Roma this week.
Conte apparently has “sympathy from upstairs” due to his squad’s injury setbacks, and the club are set to back him with more reinforcements in January, including a renewed move for Juventus wing-back Alex Sandro.

Zinedine Zidane’s prospects are not looking so rosy. The Mirror says the Real Madrid legend is “facing serious doubts” about his Bernabeu future after being demolished by the Dele Alli team.
Real’s 3-1 defeat at Wembley last night is apparently the match that “could spell the end for Zidane’s reign”, although the article contains nothing of substance to back up this claim aside from alluding to the fact that Madrid don’t tend to have much patience with struggling gaffers.
PSG target Poch
It’s not just the bad managers who are the subject of gossip; it’s the good ones too. And today, that can only mean Mauricio Pochettino.
A French website we have never heard of called Paris United says Tottenham’s tactical genius is on a six-man shortlist to replace Unai Emery at Paris Saint-Germain. The other five men are Conte, Jose Mourinho, Andre Villas-Boas (really??), Carlo Ancelotti and Marcelo Gallardo of River Plate.
Meanwhile, managerless Everton are also set to turn to Mourinho – specifically, the ginger Mourinho, aka Sean Dyche.
The Sun says the Toffees are ready to pay the Burnley boss’ £2.5m release fee and could appoint him as early as next Monday.
Watford’s Marco Silva and Wolves’ Nuno Espirito Santo were also reportedly “under consideration” at Goodison Park, but Santo is “inclined to” stay with the promotion-chasing Championship outfit rather than joining the relegation-threatened Merseysiders (Guardian).
Also in the market for a new boss are relegation-threatened Sunderland, who sacked Simon Grayson two days ago. Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist is a contender (Star), while ex-Hull City gaffer Phil Brown – now at Southend – says taking over the Black Cats would be his “dream job” (Express).
The dilemma for the Sunderland board is whether to appoint one of these guys or hold out a bit longer to see if Zidane gets sacked…
Elsewhere, for those in need of your daily player transfer gossip fix, Arsenal are plotting a “shock move” for Chelsea youngster Charly Musonda, who is “ready to quit Stamford Bridge” (Mirror), Barcelona and Liverpool target Luan has signed a new contract with Brazilian side Gremio, the spoilsport (Goal) and Tottenham are “leading the race” to sign Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney (Star). Yesterday, Man Utd were reported to be “leading the race” for him. Guess that’s what beating Real Madrid does for you.
