Gossip: Man City 'want Hazard and Alderweireld' in new spending spree, Man Utd 'to gazump Chelsea' for Richarlison, United 'watch Mawson'

Manchester City are chasing Alderweireld, Weigl and Hazard – it seems

It’s a terrible time to be a Manchester City fan. Smashed by Liverpool (twice!) in the Champions League and beaten at home in the Manchester derby, the Citizens lurch from one crisis to the next – their lead at the top of the Premier League table having been cut to a pathetic 13 points.

So how can they get out of this horrible mess? By spending millions and millions and millions of pounds on new players, of course.

The Telegraph reports that Pep Guardiola, to boost his threadbare squad, is targeting three more “big” players this summer – specifically “a defensive midfielder, a versatile forward and probably a centre-half”.

Candidates for the midfield role are Julian Weigl of Borussia Dortmund, Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred, Jorginho at Napoli and Jean-Michel Seri of Nice.

Pep’s “dream” versatile forward would be Chelsea star Eden Hazard, although he is more likely to bag £90m-rated Monaco man Thomas Lemar or January target Riyad Mahrez of Leicester City.

As for the “probably a centre-half” bit, the paper adds that much depends on whether Guardiola trusts Vincent Kompany’s body to remain intact for another year. If he doesn’t trust it (and let’s be honest, he probably shouldn’t), then Tottenham contract rebel Toby Alderweireld is viewed as the logical replacement.

City are also being linked in the Mail with a move for Brazilian defender Eder Militao, an uncapped 20-year-old who plays for Sao Paulo.

But in the meantime, Pep will just have to soldier on for the rest of the season with the meagre resources at his disposal and hope that, somehow, his rabble of a side can cling on to their precarious position at the top.

United take on Chelsea for £40m forward

The Mirror claims that Manchester United and Chelsea are battling to sign Watford forward, but before reading this story you will probably have to complete a short survey in which you will be asked which of the following snack brands “you would consider choosing”: Walkers Max, Pringles, McCoys Core, Doritos or None of the Above.

Richarlison to Manchester United ‘could happen’ next season

Naturally, I ticked all the boxes because they are all crisps and therefore delicious (even though I have no idea what a Walkers “Max” or a McCoys “Core” is). I subsequently learned that Jose Mourinho is “ready to gazump” the Blues with a £40m move for the 20-year-old Brazilian.

However, Chelsea may retain the upper hand because Richarlison reportedly “socialises regularly” with fellow Brazilians David Luiz and Willian. Luiz is known to be bang on the Groupon deals for London’s top Rodizio restaurants and often saves a voucher for his young Watford pal.

Meanwhile, United have “sent scouts” to watch Swansea centre-back Alfie Mawson as Mourinho seeks to “bolster his back four”. The Sun says Mourinho’s goons were in attendance at the Swans’ draw with West Brom at the weekend, where they could see first-hand how Mawson coped with the scintillating Baggies attack.

Elsewhere, Tottenham, Man Utd, Everton and Newcastle will fight to sign £25m-rated Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand – who wants to leave Saints whether they are relegated or not (Sun), former Paris Saint-Germain manager Laurent Blanc is a target for Chelsea, Everton and Lyon (Le10Sport) and Fernando Torres’ hopes of moving to the MLS next season have been dealt a blow by the fact that no American clubs want to sign him (Sports Illustrated). China or West Ham it is then.
