Gossip: PSG to 'buy' Jose Mourinho, Tottenham 'block' Man United's Gareth Bale transfer and more

Jose Mourinho has been sounded out about taking over at Paris Saint-Germain.
Jose Mourinho has been sounded out about taking over at Paris Saint-Germain.

With the never-ending rise of player transfer fees, it was only a matter time before managers started costing millions too. And it seems that day has arrived, with two Premier League bosses being linked with big-money moves to rival clubs.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly wanted by Paris Saint-Germain in a £30m deal, while Everton are set to make a £12m bid for Watford’s Marco Silva.

What next? Manchester City snapping up Bournemouth’s kit man for £1.5m? Newcastle’s tea lady slapping in a transfer request? Arsenal purchasing some Serbian ultras to add a bit of atmosphere to the Emirates? It’s inevitable.

The Sunday Mirror claims the Special One will become the world’s most expensive manager this summer if PSG meet his release clause, which will double when the Red Devils activate a one-year extension on his current deal.

Perversely that would leave Mourinho with £30m less to spend on new players, although at PSG that probably doesn’t matter.

Everton, meanwhile, are so “desperate” to land Silva that they are willing to hand a large chunk of his transfer war chest directly to the Hornets (Sun on Sunday).

Having had bids of £8.5m and £10m turned down, the Toffees are set to raise their offer for the Portuguese coach to £12m. Guess he’d still be better value than Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Tottenham challenge United for Bale

The latest twist in the Gareth Bale to Man Utd saga (these twists tend to occur on a daily basis, to be fair) is that Tottenham are set to “block” the Welshman’s move to Old Trafford.

The Sunday Express says Spurs have “first refusal” on Bale as part of the deal that took him to Real Madrid in 2013 and they could use it to “scupper” United by matching whatever bid the Red Devils make.

There are plenty of other fish in the sea for United though. The Daily Star Sunday says Mourinho is set to return to Chelsea for Brazilian midfielder Willian, who will be surplus to requirements once the Blues sign PSG’s Lucas Moura.

Meanwhile, Valencia’s 20-year-old attacking midfielder Carlos Soler has reportedly “begged” the Spanish side to let him join United in January in a £45m deal (Sunday Express) and Mourinho is also set to make a “£136m double raid” for Bale and Antoine Griezmann (Sun on Sunday). Not sure who did the maths on that one, given that both are valued are at least £80m.

West Ham’s new manager David Moyes continues to threaten to go wild in the transfer market in January, with the Sun on Sunday claiming the Scot will spend his £30m January transfer kitty on Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho and Hadjuk Split’s Hamza Barry. No relation to Gareth (Sun on Sunday).

Elsewhere, Manchester City are set to make a shock £12m move for Crystal Palace left-back Patrick van Aanholt (Sun on Sunday), Liverpool and Tottenham are “locked in a £20m battle” to sign 20-year-old Sheffield United midfielder David Brooks (Sunday Mirror) and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is “convinced” that contract rebels Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil want to stay at the Emirates (Standard). But he has also been convinced that the Gunners can win the Premier League title for the past 13 years.
