Jürgen Klopp may regret not picking Harvey Elliott more this season but he may not have been at Liverpool at all, had Chelsea not released him as a youngster.

Elliott has now played over 100 games for the Reds and starred in the win over Tottenham last weekend. The 21-year-old scored a stunning long-range effort and provided a further assist, taking his tallies to four and nine respectively.

He is even now knocking on the door to be included in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the European Championships. Elliott has had to fight to even make it as a professional footballer, having been let go by Chelsea.

He took part in The Reds Roundtable series, alongside Klopp and teammate Cody Gakpo, and revealed: "I was at a few clubs when I was younger. I was at Chelsea when I was a kid, and was released because they said I was too small.

“I was at Fulham, like a pre-academy thing, like you go sometimes, once a week, twice a week, to train, but I didn’t really enjoy it. But then Fulham contacted my father and said ‘look, I hear he hasn’t got a club, does he want to come for a trial?’. Then I went for a trial at Fulham when I was 13 and then [was there] up until 16 when I left.”

Elliott impressed amid Liverpool's injury crisis earlier this season but then found himself out of the team as the title push faltered. And Klopp admitted in his press conference on Friday that he could have utilized him more.

Klopp said: "It’s not like this that I go back and think, ‘OK, what did we all do wrong here and there?’ But if I regret one thing a little bit it’s that Harvey didn’t play often enough maybe.

"It was in a very important and intense period. January, [with] a lot of injuries, he played really good, he was probably our best player, right wing, right midfield, all these kinds of things. Everybody came back and he had minutes here and there and then he didn’t start anymore. [He] came on [and had] a big impact but it’s really nice that he could show."

Liverpool.com says: Chelsea's loss has certainly been Liverpool's gain and Elliott has had arguably his best season for the Reds this term. He will be frustrated to have lost his place at a key stage of the campaign but seems primed to play a key role under Arne Slot next season. The future is very bright for the 21-year-old.
