Gossip: Man United 'want' £55m Aguero, Barcelona 'target' Chelsea boss Conte', Arsenal make Mbappe 'promise'

What a weird season it’s been for Sergio Aguero. He’s been usurped by a teenager, he’s scored more goals than any Premier League striker in England, and now he’s being tipped to make an unthinkable transfer at a scandalous price: the Manchester City star is reportedly on his way to Manchester United for £55m.

That, at least, is what the Sun on Sunday have “exclusively” claimed in a story that would have sounded completely silly this time last year, whereas now it only sounds a little bit silly.

United haven’t signed a player from City for more than 20 years, although that is probably because City players have traditionally been rubbish compared to nowadays. Meanwhile, a fee of £55m seems quite low in the current transfer climate, where it would barely be enough for City to buy a new left-back.

But the Sun is letting none of that get in its way as it predicts that United boss Jose Mourinho will target the Argentine as a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and is ready to “test the resolve” of his city neighbours.

Speaking of that new left-back, the Sunday Mirror says City are set to launch a £50m bid for Juventus’ 26-year-old Brazilian, Alex Sandro. The Italians will apparently find it “tough to reject” that kind of offer, although Sandro may find it similarly tough to give up regular trophy-winning.

Like Aguero, another City legend who has had a slightly prickly relationship with Pep Guardiola is Yaya Toure, and it could get even pricklier following the Daily Star Sunday’s claim that the club have asked the midfielder to take a pay cut of more than 50 per cent.

The Ivorian currently earns £230,000 a week at the Etihad but is being offered £100,000 a week to stay, which to be fair is still a decent salary. Maybe he’ll accept it if they’ll throw in a few birthday cakes to sweeten the deal.

Anyone with a desperate desire to read some negative news about Chelsea (that’s probably all of you, then) will be encouraged by the Sunday Express’ story that Blues manager Antonio Conte is wanted by Barcelona.

The Italian is apparently “already lined up” to replace Luis Enrique at the Nou Camp, while the paper suggests Roman Abramovich would replace Conte with former Russia boss Leonid Slutsky. Now that would be funny.

Arsenal are still plugging away trying to sign Kylian Mpabbe, with the Mail on Sunday reporting that the Gunners are aiming to persuade the Monaco striker it’s a good idea to swap the Champions League for the Europa League because “he will play every week” if he moves to the Emirates. It’s a clever strategy – they should try it with Lionel Messi too.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich are prepared to pay £55m for Gunners contract rebel Alexis Sanchez (Sunday Telegraph), Turkish side Fenerbahce want West Ham’s Slaven Bilic to be their next manager (Sunday Express) and Stoke boss Mark Hughes has expressed his interest in signing Chelsea’s John Terry (Sun on Sunday). Sparky gushed, “You’re not just getting John Terry the player, you’re getting John Terry the individual as well.” That’s the problem though, isn’t it?
