Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp certainly didn't have too much to say about Manchester City during his farewell scenes. The focus was firmly on the incredible memories he has given supporters over the last eight-and-a-half years.

But Klopp's tenure at Liverpool cannot truly be defined without Manchester City. And the boss did have a few words for his old foe.

In his speech to Anfield, he was asked about one game he would relive if he got the chance. Klopp took that question in an unexpected direction, joking that he would change the course of one of those titanic clashes with Pep Guardiola.

"One of the City games we drew. That would have helped!" Klopp joked.

Liverpool, of course, twice came within a single point of Manchester City, losing out on the Premier League title by the thinnest of margins in 2018/19 and again in 2021/22. Both seasons featured at least one draw with Guardiola's side, and one more goal in any of those fixtures would have been enough for the title.

But Klopp was defiant and clear in his message that he feels sorry for those who cannot look beyond the number of titles won when assessing his time as manager. And he showed his class by starting his Sky Sports interview off by congratulating Manchester City on its success.

"Great, can't say differently," said Klopp, when asked for his thoughts on the day. "First and foremost, congratulations to Man City. I think that's what I heard, at least, that they became champions."

Guardiola's side were indeed crowned champions of the Premier League for a fourth successive season, a figure that would stand at seven had it not been for Klopp's Liverpool. Manchester City beat West Ham on the final day to secure victory, despite Arsenal managing to come from behind to beat Everton.

Liverpool.com says: It's the mark of the man that Klopp was so quick to congratulate Manchester City. The same cannot be said of the Etihad outfit, which launched a thinly-veiled dig at Liverpool by celebrating its success with a social media post reading 'this means four', a reference to the 'this means more' strapline used by the Reds.

But that only goes to prove Klopp's point that his time at the football club has been about so much more than silverware. He has understood the club from the first day, and has lived up to what it means to be the manager of Liverpool. As a coach but more importantly as a human, he has embodied the values of the team and the city.
