Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes the Reds must have a big pot of money to spend in the summer having only signed Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili so far under Arne Slot.

Chiesa has played eight times for the Reds since coming in for a cut-price fee from Juventus in the summer. Mamardashvili, meanwhile, is not due to arrive from Valencia until the summer.

While fans often get fixated on transfers, Liverpool is leading the way in the Premier League and the Champions League regardless. And Slot has managed to get much more out of plenty of players who were on his roster when he came in and the season is going much better than anyone could have imagined when Jurgen Klopp announced his departure just over a year ago.

"If you talk about a coach, sometimes a coach is not just buying players, it’s actually improving the players he inherited," Carragher said on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet. "If you look at Slot, Ryan Gravenberch looks a different player, Luis Diaz looks a different player, Cody Gakpo looks a different player. So, he’s had an influence there.

"These are players that were bought 18 months ago. But there’s no doubt in the fact that Liverpool haven’t bought anyone this window and didn’t really buy anyone in the summer... there must be a big pot of money there to buy whoever they want next summer."

Liverpool.com says: Much of what the Reds do in the summer will be dictated by what happens with the three big contract situations. If any of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk or Trent Alexander-Arnold leave, they will need to be replaced. That, clearly, will be neither cheap nor easy. Ideally, all three will stay and Liverpool can focus on adding one or two bits of icing to the top of the cake.
