Jamie Carragher slams 'ridiculous' FSG theory after quiet Liverpool transfer window
Jamie Carragher would like Liverpool to sign a left-sided defender and another midfield body. But the Reds legend has slammed some of the criticism thrown the way of Fenway Sports Group (FSG) as "ridiculous".
"To put it mildly, the argument that FSG is a hindrance rather than a help is not compelling — actually, it is a bit ridiculous," he wrote in his Daily Telegraph column. "If Arne Slot and Richard Hughes had identified the right player last summer or in January, they would have been backed.
"It was Slot quoted as saying "Martin Zubimendi or no one". It has never been Liverpool’s way during any successful era to buy the wrong player for the sake of looking proactive."

Liverpool has only signed Federico Chiesa so far since Slot arrived from Feyenoord. But that was partly a strategic decision to allow him to get used to the players he already had, and partly because finding upgrades on the current roster is difficult.
"Only two clubs — Manchester City and Real Madrid — stopped Jurgen Klopp winning a couple more English and Champions League titles," Carragher continued. "When you fall short there is a sense of regret and a feeling that one more player could have made the difference. But everyone knows Liverpool do not have the capacity to outspend Real and City.
"To suggest Liverpool do not invest or spend big when necessary is plain wrong. Last week’s financial figures released by Deloitte showed Liverpool’s wage bill for 2023/24 had risen £14m ($17m) to £387m ($480m), underlining how much it increases after performance triggers and bonuses for winning a trophy and qualifying for the Champions League."
Earlier in the week, Liverpool confirmed its place at the top of the new-look Champions League group phase. This weekend, it could move nine points clear of Arsenal in the Premier League standings before the Gunners take on Manchester City.
Liverpool.com says: Carragher is right. If Liverpool was struggling, it would be fine to criticize a lack of movement in the transfer market. It is at times a risky approach but right now, the Reds are flying. Any suggestion that it was a mistake not to sign anyone other than Chiesa last summer is simply incorrect as things stand.
