Jamie Carragher has telling reaction to Liverpool's FA Cup exit as title theory emerges
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is far from fussed about his former side having been knocked out of the FA Cup. While an exit at the hands of a struggling Championship outfit was not the outcome Arne Slot wanted, one school of thought says it might help.
No team has ever won all four trophies in the English game. Liverpool went all the way to the end in all four competitions two seasons ago but then couldn't get over the line in the big two: the Premier League and the Champions League. The following campaign, it fell off a cliff with the hangover one likely explanation.
And having taken control of the league title race this time around, having already made the last 16 in Europe, and earlier in the week ensuring it qualified for the final of the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup was clearly the lowest priority on the list. While losing at Home Park was not ideal, there is a silver lining.

Replying with the "100" emoji to a social media post which said "Probability to win the title has just gone up", Carragher was certainly taking the positives from Liverpool's shock defeat. He has long said Slot should bin off the domestic cups in favor of focusing on what matters most, though he won't mind too much if the Reds end up beating Newcastle United at Wembley next month.
Of course, with a much-changed starting XI and key men like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk left at home, had Liverpool gone through, it wouldn't have been detrimental right now. But a tougher draw in round five could have forced Slot into playing more big hitters just days before a crucial European match and after playing five league matches in 15 days.
Instead, Liverpool will now have a free weekend at the start of March, which could prove vital as it looks to hold its position in the Premier League standings. Losing to Plymouth might hurt in the short term — and it will definitely harm the chances of several players of playing again this season — but it might, in the end, work out as being beneficial overall.
