Liverpool opted not to make a signing in January this year, but that has not always been the case. When the right player is available on the market, it is wise to do a deal rather than delay.

There has been some brilliant signings made by the Reds in the past in January. Even so, doing a rankings list with Sky Sports, former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has ranked one current player as the best ever.

Redknapp put Virgil van Dijk as his number one selection, ahead of Luis Suarez. Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Vidic, Bruno Fernandes and Gary Cahill, who made up the rest of his top six. Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz were also mid-season additions, with the Brazilian also being sold to Barcelona in January.

Arne Slot was asked why he didn't push for a winter signing this season during his press conference earlier today. "Maybe there aren't many managers with as good a squad as I have," he replied. "The players have shown the trust we have in them was correct.

"We don't have many long-term injuries. We did have some with Alisson, [Diogo] Jota and others. But other than Trent [Alexander-Arnold], they are all ready today so there was no reason to add to the team unless there's a chance in the market. We saw that with the goalkeeper we brought in (Giorgi Mamardashvili in the summer)."

Liverpool.com says: Van Dijk has ended up proving to be a bargain for Liverpool, even at what looked like a steep price. Suarez was brilliant as well but the Dutchman has been even more transformational. Coutinho and Sturridge coming to Anfield for a combined sum of around $27m (£21m/€25m) should be right up there among the best deals, too.
