Jordan Henderson could line up against Liverpool in the Champions League last 16 as Monaco attempts to sign the former Reds captain this month.

Henderson left Liverpool to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq in the summer of 2023 but lasted just a few months there before returning to Europe with Ajax last January.

And 12 months on, he could be on the move again, with Monaco reportedly keen to land the former England international ahead of the closure of the January transfer window.

Monaco is one of four clubs that Liverpool could face in the last 16 of the Champions League, with Brest, Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica the others. The draw for the play-off round takes place on Friday, January 31.

Ajax is competing in the Europa League this season, which means Henderson would be eligible to play for Monaco in the Champions League were he to join the principality club.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported that Monaco was closing in on a deal to sign Henderson, but Dutch outlet De Telegraaf is contrastingly reporting that Ajax is blocking the 34-year-old's departure.

De Telegraaf says that Ajax views Henderson as a key player in its bid to secure a top-two finish in the Eredivisie, which would be enough to secure a place in next season's Champions League.

It is claimed that Monaco is willing to go to great lengths to sign Henderson, but Ajax technical director Alex Kroes has apparently made it clear that the player is not for sale this month. Ajax would apparently be more open to discussing a transfer for Henderson during the summer transfer window.
