Steven Gerrard has issued a statement after leaving his role as the manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

Gerrard was appointed by the Dammam-based club in 2023, becoming one of the highest-paid managers in world soccer, but he presided over just 23 wins in 59 matches during his time in charge.

The former Liverpool captain said: "After careful consideration, the club and I have mutually agreed to part ways. This was not an easy decision, but sometimes in football, things don't work out as planned. The Saudi Pro League is a tough and competitive league, and I have nothing but respect for the players and staff who give their all every day.

"I want to sincerely thank everyone at the club for their support and hard work. Football in Saudi Arabia is moving in the right direction, and I will always appreciate my time here. Wishing the team and the fans nothing but success moving forward."

Meanwhile, Al-Ettifaq's club president, Same Al Misehal, said: "Sometimes things don't go as planned, but the firm foundations he helped build will guarantee a bright future in the long term.

"He changed the club for the better and that will never be forgotten. This decision, made with mutual respect and in agreement is in the best interest of both Steven and the club as we move forward."

Gerrard made 710 appearances for Liverpool during his playing career, leaving in 2015. Gerrard retired from playing in 2016 after a short spell with LA Galaxy, and embarked on a managerial career in 2018 when he took charge of Rangers.

The former England captain enjoyed a successful three-year period in Glasgow, helping Rangers to win its first title in 10 years in 2021, and he was appointed Aston Villa manager later that year. Gerrard lasted just 11 months as Villa manager, and that was his last job before he moved to Saudi Arabia.
