Jose Mourinho's Manchester United transfer strategy outlined by Ed Woodward

Jose Mourinho is not looking to make wholesale changes to Manchester United’s squad during the transfer window, according to Ed Woodward.

Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, has been giving his conference call to the club’s investors this afternoon.

The Red Devils are on track to post record revenues in 2017 but today announced their debt has increased by 27 per cent to £409.3million.

But that worrying rise, which the club is blaming on Brexit, will not have major implications on Manchester United’s transfer business this summer.

Mourinho’s first season in charge has not reached the heights many supporters would have hoped and his recruitment was focused around four key pillars.

Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly were signed to bolster a squad that had failed to secure Champions League football.

The likes of Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin have been high-profile casualties after making little inroads under the Special One.

Woodward’s call to investors revealed Mourinho’s growing belief in his squad and hinted fans will be seeing less activity this summer, although United have been linked with a mega-move for Atletico Madrid ace Antoine Griezmann.

“Yes, I think there is a happiness from the manager at this point as you can tell in his recent interviews,” he said.

“There is always going to be continual improvement but you don’t have to churn a large number of players.

“If you win everything you still want to improve the squad, that is the nature of the business.”

Woodward also used his briefing to reveal plans for an MUTV app that will offer services to more than 160 countries.

He refused to confirm whether the United States would be the club’s chosen destination for their summer tour.
