Liverpool U19s battled from two goals down in the UEFA Youth League round of 32 only to then crash out of Europe on penalties. The young Reds are now out of the competition having fallen at the first knockout hurdle.

Early on, an impressive Stuttgart side moved into a commanding lead through Eliot Bujupi and Efe Korkut. But Barry Lewtas' team fought back and got itself on level terms before half-time.

Kieran Morrison, who was named on the bench in the Champions League last month, pulled one back. Trent Kone-Doherty played a one-two with Morrison before he then put the ball into the back of the net.

Kone-Doherty, who made his senior debut just a few days ago in the FA Cup, then leveled with an excellent low finish just before the interval, moving himself level with Jerome Sinclair as the Reds' top scorer in this tournament with six goals.

Sixteen-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha impressed again while goalkeeper Kornel Misciur produced a couple of very good saves in normal time. But with the scores level at the final whistle, the match immediately went to penalties with no extra-time.

Michael Laffey scored with Liverpool's first penalty kick, but Amara Nallo who was sent off minutes into his senior debut against PSV — then stepped up and missed. USMNT talent Keyrol Figueroa scored a great penalty but Stuttgart didn't miss once, winning 5-3 on penalties after a good game.

It is the German side that will progress into the last-16, with Liverpool bowing out. Atalanta and AZ Alkmaar have both also gone through so far with the junior UEFA competition continuing. Manchester City is the only other English club still involved, playing Danish outfit FC Midtjylland tomorrow.
