Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has questioned Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez over his challenge on Adama Traore - but believes it wouldn't have been a red card.

The Argentine was the match-winner for United at Craven Cottage as his deflected effort was the decisive goal in an important win for Ruben Amorim's side. However, it could have been so different after the defender reignited a feud with powerful Fulham winger, Traore.

Martinez appeared to jump in to a challenge with the Spaniard before - being left in a heap following a collision with the Cottagers attacker. The 27-year-old was fortunate earlier in the campaign to avoid action, after a similar jumping tackle against Crystal Palace, when he looked to intervene with Daichi Kamada in possession.

While Gallagher felt the action was "unwise", he believes - should there have been contact - Martinez would have avoided a red card in any case. He said: "It's not a wise challenge, I don't know why he does this.

"I don't think that could have been a red, because he's come such a short distance and he hasn't caught the player - but I think it's certainly a foul because you can't tackle two-footed anyhow. It's just the nature of how he does it."

Fulham manager Marco Silva felt that the result on Sunday night was unfair on his side, with United reducing their gap to the hosts to four points, he said: "I think it was cruel for us tonight. The result, their first shot on [target] was on 78 minutes. Clearly we were the team that had more control.

"I don't remember one dangerous moment from them during the first half. Our second half was not as good and - unfortunately for us - a really lucky goal, deflection, and they scored."
