Manchester United learn Matheus Cunha release clause truth after transfer statement
Matheus Cunha has a £60million release clause in his Wolves contract that can be activated in the summer amid transfer interest from Manchester United.
The 25-year-old, who joined Wolves on a permanent deal from Atletico Madrid for £35m in July 2023, has attracted attention for his performances since making the move to Molineux. After netting 14 times in 36 matches in his first full season at Wolves, he has added a further 12 goals and four assists in 25 appearances this term.
There was increased speculation that Cunha might leave Wolves in the January transfer window, with Arsenal, Tottenham and United linked. However, the Brazilian stayed put and signed a new four-and-a-half year contract in a clear statement to suitors that a winter move would not be considered.

But as expected, a release clause was inserted into Cunha's new deal that is expected to see him leave this summer. According to AS, Cunha's buyout clause is £60m as of June and won't change regardless of whether Wolves stay in the Premier League or are relegated to the Championship, although it could be negotiated.
It's added that United and Spurs are 'following his development very closely' and are anticipated to renew their interest in the Brazil international. Wolves rejected approaches for Cunha last month but there is an expectation that he is going to depart for pastures new at the end of the season and make the club a tidy profit.
United are set to dip into the forward market this summer and Cunha could be at the top of their shopping list. The forward scored and added an assist against Ruben Amorim's side in Wolves' 2-0 win on Boxing Day.
Before then, however, Cunha's attention is no doubt on keeping Wolves in the Premier League, with Vitor Pereira's side two points above the relegation zone. They beat Aston Villa 2-0 last time out in the top flight and are bidding to keep themselves afloat and above the likes of Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester.
Speaking after signing his new contract, Cunha said: "Everyone wants something more for their career , but I feel like this is the time to keep fighting and show everyone what we have and the love I want to give back.
"I know we’re not in a perfect situation right now, but we’re still trying to give our best to give good things to the fans and the club."
