Manchester United sent Marcus Rashford transfer message as time runs out in frustrating talks
The January transfer window is coming to a close, with a "new challenge" for Marcus Rashford looking increasingly unlikely with a limited number of suitable moves for the forward - and Manchester United fans in the Manchester Evening News comments section have been left frustrated by how a difficult situation has been handled.
In December 2024, Rashford gave his now-infamous "ready for a new challenge" interview to the journalist Henry Winter, sparking speculation over his immediate future and how United would respond to his seemingly inevitable departure. A move has not materialised, with nothing firm to go on, and it seems that club and player will have to decide how to move forward with the rest of the season.
Rashford has been left at the fringes of the squad, with Ruben Amorim blaming training performances, but there is no disciplinary issue to handle. The manager has demanded change on the training pitch, saying: "We are waiting for Marcus, if he wants it really really bad. You try to make it something personal but it’s not personal. I have nothing against Marcus. I just have to make the same rules for everybody. For me it’s so simple. It’s always the same answer."

Some fans have been left frustrated by how the situation has been allowed to drag on with both parties. Commenter Anniemause says: “If Amorim really wants Rashford gone why has he done so much to reduce his value and make him unsaleable? I have no problem with him being dropped and indeed if he wants to go or indeed the time is right for him to leave then fine but United have to be smart about it.
"By leaving him out of the squad and talking him down at every press conference all Amorim is doing is reducing his potential transfer fee and making it less and less likely that any club will come close to matching Rashford's demands.”
Reader Footballstan writes: “I don’t think he wants him to go as United don’t have enough funds to buy an attacker in this window. I’m Surprised that he’s asking rashford to give 100% in training and track back, as he shouldn’t need telling. If he does at 27 then I personally think it’s too late and I hope they get shot of him in the next window, but his ridiculous wages are a problem.”
Denislawking says: “I never thought for one minute we would find a buyer at a price the club could agree to. And who would buy him? He isn’t by any stretch of the imagination worth 1.4 million a month. The whole thing, from any angle, is absurd.”
NickinFrance writes: “I clearly don't see what goes on training, but on the pitch there have been many players phoning in their performances. I really struggle to believe Rashford is uniquely poor in this respect. He's still 3rd highest goalscorer this season despite being excluded from the squad for loads of games.
"It doesn't seem the way Amorim is making a spectacle of Rashford is either rational nor remotely helpful. I think its 50/50 who will be at the club longest.”
Amil says: "If Rashford wants to leave, he's probably training just to keep fit and isn't motivated to be on the team. Unless he decides to fight for his place in the team (just as Maguire did), I don't see him hitting the levels and commitment Ruben is asking for.”
Jesse47 writes: “The coach must be clear if he has a beef with Marcus. He is not the only player who is under performing. We have the likes of Anthony, Malacia, Casemiro, even Onana is always helping the opponents on corner kicks. Should the coach do the same treatment.”
