Manchester United Fan View: 3 things we learned at White Hart Lane

After playing Celta Vigo in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final on Thursday, a lot of people expected manager Jose Mourinho to make a number of changes ahead of the final meeting against Tottenham Hotspur at the White Hart Lane.

As Mauricio Pochettino and his men bid farewell to the stadium with a solid display against the Red Devils, the hosts showed why they were head-and-shoulders above the visitors from the first minute till the end. Completing over five shots on target, Spurs were unlucky to not put more than two goals past goalkeeper David De Gea.

Here are the three things we learn from Manchester United’s latest result in the league…

Rooney’s consolation goal covered the cracks of his poor performance

After the fixture against Arsenal, Manchester United fans would have thought that Wayne Rooney would come back with a better performance versus Tottenham Hotspur, however, it was all different as he dropped one of the worst displays of all time but still managed to get on to the score sheet for his team. A lot of supporters already feel that he will not be at Old Trafford next season and him leaving the club would be best for both parties.

For both of the goals for Tottenham, the captain could have arguably defended better and he was seriously off the pace as he kept going into tackles very late. Although he is a striker, forwards like Diego Costa or Harry Kane would have gone into the aerial duels and had cleared the ball away from danger. On top of that, Rooney simply looked lost on and off the ball which should sum up his performance.

Spurs end the season with an undefeated home record in the league

Pochettino’s side finished the campaign with 17 victories, two draws and zero defeats at the White Hart Lane, collecting eight points more than Premier League Champions Chelsea. As well as scoring more and conceding less than Antonio Conte’s men at home, Spurs are currently playing one of the most exciting football within England and Europe. This was actually the first time that Tottenham had finished unbeaten at home since the 1964-65 season.

Also, Spurs proved throughout the game that they are everything that Manchester United once used to be, a team that that was constantly quick and sharp in both areas of the pitch and were always stronger than their opposition. Following the Sir Alex Ferguson era, the Red Devils are nothing but strangers in the middle of the pitch and are very ineffective whilst they are trying to regain possession.

Mourinho’s defensive setup shows how much he trusts this mentally weak squad

At the start of the season, Jose Mourinho placed his full trust into the current Manchester United squad but they did not pay him back with regular victories within the league. Game after game, the manager has realised that the club still have a lot of deadwood remaining and he will certainly need another long summer transfer window to get rid of them all.

With the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling not earning the manager’s trust and the options in midfield being totally limited, Mourinho has surprisingly gone with a back line of six players when it comes to the games against the top six teams. Following the pointless blanks away from home to Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, the Red Devils have finally scored an away goal against one of the big teams through a Wayne Rooney tap in during the 71st minute.
