Manchester United defender Rhys Bennett is being assessed after picking up an injury on loan at Fleetwood Town.

Bennett signed for Fleetwood on a season-long loan in August and has made 17 appearances, but he sustained a shoulder injury when he started against Carlisle United on Saturday.

The 21-year-old was replaced in the 73rd minute of the game and is currently being assessed. The Manchester Evening News understands Bennett is waiting for a scan on the issue, but the injury doesn't seem to be serious at this stage and he is still taking part in light training.

Bennett's loan at Fleetwood has been a success - he has made 11 starts in League Two - and it's hoped he can recover from the injury to enjoy a strong second half of the season.

United have sent several academy players on loan to League Two in the January transfer window and Joe Hugill started for Carlisle in the game that Bennett picked up an injury in.

Fleetwood play Walsall on Tuesday night and Bennett's injury means he is set to miss a clash against fellow academy graduate Ethan Wheatley, who also recently left on loan.

Bennett captained the talented Under-18 team that lifted the FA Youth Cup in the 2021/2022 season, scoring the opening goal of the final against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

He is still yet to make his senior United debut but made the bench against West Ham in the Premier League in December 2023 and against Wigan in the FA Cup a month later.

Bennett signed a new United contract in July 2023 and is a local lad who was born in Denton.
