With Amad suffering a season-ending injury in the build-up to Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur, Ruben Amorim would be forced to find a solution to the most devastating of problems. However, in a twist the roadmap may have actually been laid out by his predecessor.

One day out from the trip to North London, the worst news has arrived - a major injury to Amad. The 21-year-old Ivory Coast international has been one of the most prolific attacking options since Amorim joined the club midway through the season, scoring nine goals with six assists.

But now he is staring at a spell on the sidelines that will mean he does not play again before the 2024/25 campaign's end. On Instagram the Man United player wrote: "Extremely disappointed to be writing this message in such a crucial time of the season.

"Unfortunately, I will be out for some time with an injury. I will come back stronger than ever!! Time to support the boys from the outside. Still loads to play for."

Failing to sign an attacker during the winter transfer window makes this situation far from ideal. Yet managers are in their jobs to find solutions to such problems, and if Amorim were to look back to only last October he would see Erik ten Hag's answer.

The Dutchman, who was sacked only four days after this decision, took charge of the 1-1 Europa League draw at Fenerbahce. In that match he bizarrely used natural full-back Noussair Mazraoui as an attacking midfielder in that game.

"I know him from before. At Ajax, sometimes, I played him there. Also, as a full-back in our system, he's playing in the half spaces, so he's capable of doing this job," Ten Hag gave as reasoning to TNT Sports prior to kick-off.

With his tenure not lasting long after, the experiment came to an end but now in the most desperate of situations it could be Amorim's call to give it another go.

His inverted wingers take up roles similar to that of attacking midfielders, plus the Moroccan international is more than comfortable on his preferred right flank.
