Manchester United are set to miss out on the signing of Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel with Tottenham Hotspur agreeing a loan move for the 19-year-old.

Tel has been the subject of interest from the Premier League in the last two weeks after failing to break into Vincent Kompany's team this season.

MEN Sport reported on Sunday that United were considering a swoop for the striker ahead of tonight's deadline. Ruben Amorim is desperate for attacking reinforcements after not starting Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee for Sunday's defeat to Crystal Palace.

Tel is understood to have turned down a switch to Tottenham last week after a permanent move was agreed between the two clubs. United are said to have been keen to sign the Frenchman on loan but they are now set to miss out on him.

On Friday afternoon, German journalist Florian Plettenberg broke the news that Tel was on his way to London to complete a loan move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That news was then followed by further information on the deal by Fabrizio Romano, who claims the move to the Premier League is a straight loan with no buy option.

Tel's agent posted an image of him on a private plane on his way to England prior to the news of his move to Tottenham. The loan means United have missed out on another target in January and face going into the second half of the season short in the final third.

Speaking over the weekend, Bayern sporting director Christopher Freund gave an update on the situation. "We are in a lot of discussions with him," Freund said. There has been a lot of excitement around him in recent days, and he is only 19 years old.

"We decided with him yesterday that his head was full and therefore it didn't make sense for him to be in the team today [against Holstein Kiel]. But that doesn't mean anything. It is very likely that he will still be a Bayern Munich player on Tuesday. He is undecided.

"There has been a lot of excitement around him in recent days and now he needs to take the time to think things through calmly." Freund had previously claimed that Bayern were determined to keep Tel and were planning for him to stay.
