Deadline day is here and Manchester United face a frantic end to the January transfer window in hope of adding a new attacker to Ruben Amorim's squad.

The United boss sent a huge message to Ineos and those in charge of transfers by not naming either Joshua Zirkzee or Rasmus Hojlund in his starting XI for Sunday's Premier League to Crystal Palace.

Kobbie Mainoo started as a false nine before both strikers were brought on six minutes at Jean-Philippe Mateta's opener. However, neither were able to change the outcome of the game as Palace ran-out 2-0 winners.

New signings Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven were presented to the Old Trafford faithful prior to kick-off on Sunday. The window closes at 11pm on Monday night and United continue to be linked with Bayern Munich's Mathys Tel.

A deal seems unlikely at the moment but that could quickly change with the 19-year-old facing an uncertain future in Germany. If he does become United's third signing of the window, he would have an array of options in terms of shirt numbers.

His current number, 39, is free after Scott McTominay's move to Napoli in the summer. However, with him likely to be a key part of Amorim's squad, there's the possibility that he will prefer to take one of the more recognised numbers available.

After his loan to Aston Villa was confirmed on Sunday night, Marcus Rashford no longer owns the number 10. Tel could follow in the footsteps of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Scholes, Ruud van Nistelooy and Teddy Sheringham by wearing the famous number.

Number 19 is also free after Raphael Varane's summer departure while Antony's loan move to Real Betis this month leaves number 21 free. Beyond that, number 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32 are all free for Tel to take should he sign before tonight's deadline.

Amorim made it clear after the Palace defeat that United will "try everything" to sign a forward before Monday's 11pm deadline. The club also hold an interest in Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku.

"We are trying everything to improve the team without making the mistakes of the past and also trying to balance the urgency of the moment," said Amorim. "We know all of the aspects of our club in the moment but we are trying everything.

"This market is really hard on clubs to make some deals. I want to improve the team so badly. I know what the team needs. Sometimes it's possible, sometimes it's not. When the window closes we will see the players that we have."
