Free agent Paul Pogba should be allowed to train or even play at Manchester United, according to Rio Ferdinand, as the player continues to work on his fitness in preparation for a football ban expiry - and some United fans in the Manchester Evening News comments sections can see a world where Pogba plays for the Red Devils for a third time.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: "I’d say to Pogba, ‘Come in and train with us, let me see what you’ve got’. I’d do that. I would have done that already. Come in and get fit." He added "I’d also have a look [if he’s in a position to be re-signed]."

The 31-year-old thrilled and frustrated during his two spells at Manchester United, signing for Juventus for a second time on his departure from Old Trafford in 2022. A ban on playing football expires next month, dating back to a failed drugs test in 2023.

Pogba was released by Juventus last year, meaning that he is a free agent and he can join a club at a time outside of the transfer window. If he joined and registered with Manchester United, Pogba could play Premier League football again before the summer.

It's a far-fetched situation for many, but some fans would entertain the prospect. On our Facebook page, Romario Lawrence says: “I strongly approve of this, technically one of the best midfielders I’ve ever seen and United needs a miracle at the moment.”

Reader Sammy Hassan writes: “At his worst, Paul would still be better than 99% of what we have now.” Weje Ezekiel agrees: “Paul is strong, can hold onto the ball, pass good, better than so many players at Man United right now.”

Some fans have even taken it upon themselves to figure out his contract for him, with Paul Reid saying: “Sign him on pay-per-game & performances! And the contract can be cancelled at anytime. Dictate to him, not other way around!” Lee Aaron agrees: “Pay as you play contract, worth a try.”

Andrew Boddis says: “I'd give him pay-per-game due to his injury record. Can't help but like the guy. 3rd and last chance to pay United back for still believing in him.”

Others say it would be a terrible move, for all sorts of reasons. Pat Cooney writes: “He didn't want to play for us when he was at the club last time, why would we even consider bringing him back? Leave him where he is.”

Ian Short says: “He is definitely what we don’t need, another lazy player. Why doesn’t he join Rashford at the Villa?”

Obuje B Daniel writes: “No one talking about his attitude in the dressing room. Amorim should never buy this idea of him coming back, not after so much toxic clear out. United are building a solid team, we don't want that to be disorganised." Mark Sparky Glanville adds : “The physios have enough work to do without adding to it.”
