Liverpool's new head coach, Arne Slot, has one hurdle to overcome before his era can officially begin at Anfield.

On Monday evening, the worst-kept secret in football was finally revealed as the Reds announced that Slot would be the successor to Jurgen Klopp. The 45-year-old former Feyenoord boss will officially begin work on June 1 however there is one caveat.

The club announced that his appointment is subject to receiving a work permit from the UK government. But what is this and how likely is Slot to receive one, the ECHO has taken a closer look.

What is a work permit?

In simple terms, if you are not a resident of the United Kingdom you must apply for a work permit to be entitled to employment in the country.

How will it work for Slot?

As a qualified coach, Slot must apply for an international sportsperson visa. The Dutchman will also need to prove that he is internationally established in this field and that his employment will 'develop football at the highest level'.

Liverpool will need to prove they have an employer sponsorship licence which allows them to offer employment to Slot. Once this is received, the ex-Feyenoord manager can apply for entry clearance to the UK.

How long will this take?

Permits can be applied for up to three months before the day Slot is due to start work in the UK. A decision is likely to be made within three weeks if Slot is inside the UK or eight weeks if he is outside.

The visa lasts for three years before needing to be extended. This process is straightforward so long as the circumstances of Slot's employment do not change.

After five years, Slot may be able to settle permanently in the UK if he's had at least one visa that lasted longer than 12 months.

Is this a foregone conclusion he will be given one?

Ultimately yes. Liverpool must feel confident after announcing his arrival and so long as there are no issues in Slot's past, he should be waved through with no issues.
