Ex- Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is reportedly among the candidates to take the reins at Botafogo, with the Brazilian champions narrowing their search for a new head coach.

The Spanish tactician, renowned for his successes in European football, is one of three names under consideration, alongside Portuguese manager Vasco Matos and former Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino.

Botafogo, fresh off a remarkable 2024 season that saw them secure their third Brazilian league title and a historic maiden Copa Libertadores triumph, are eager to maintain their upward momentum. With Artur Jorge departing for Qatar Stars League side Al-Rayyan earlier this year, the club is determined to find a high-caliber replacement to guide them into the future.

Benitez, who last managed Celta Vigo before parting ways in March 2024, is said to be evaluating the offer from John Textor, Botafogo's majority stakeholder. Textor, who also holds stakes in Lyon and Premier League side Crystal Palace, will ultimately decide on the managerial appointment.

If appointed, Benitez would lead Botafogo in high-profile clashes, including next summer’s Club World Cup, where they are set to face the likes of Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Seattle Sounders.

The opportunity represents a chance for the Spaniard to return to the touchline as well as the possibility for Benitez to reunite with Chelsea who will also take part in the competition.

Benitez’s glittering résumé includes two La Liga titles, two Europa League triumphs, and his legendary 2005 Champions League victory with Liverpool. His experience managing elite clubs such as Valencia, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Chelsea, and Napoli makes him an attractive option for Botafogo as they aim to solidify their place among South America’s footballing elite.

While both Lyon and Palace have previously shown interest in Benitez, the chance to lead Botafogo as they navigate this transformative chapter in their history could prove tempting.

With the managerial decision expected soon, all eyes will be on whether Benitez opts to make the move to South America.
