Rafael Nadal out of ATP Finals as Alexander Zverev completes semi-final lineup

Rafael Nadal is out of the ATP Finals after Alexander Zverev beat Daniil Medvedev to seal his place in the last four.

Nadal had done his part by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas earlier in the day in a thrilling three-hour encounter, winning 6-7, 6-4, 7-5.

But the 33-year-old also needed Medvedev to beat Zverev in order to secure his passage through to the semi-finals.

That proved too tall an order for fourth seed Medvedev, who fell to a 4-6, 6-7 defeat against a determined Zverev.

The Russian had already been eliminated after losing both of his opening group matches. He was defeated by Stefanos Tsitsipas and then threw away match point and a 5-1 lead against Nadal, who fought back to win.

Nadal paid the price for his surprise defeat to Zverev in the first match having arrived in London following an abdominal injury that forced him out of the Paris Masters. He does, however, end the year as the world no1.

Defending champion Zverev joins Tsitsipas, Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer in the semi-finals and becomes only the fifth active player to reach this stage of the tournament in consecutive seasons.

Semi-final fixtures (to be played Saturday, November 16):

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Roger Federer

Alexander Zverev vs Dominic Thiem
